Fat Kid Friday is a video series spotlighting exuberant dishes across Oahu. Crazy, ginormous or over-the-top luxe, these are the broke-the-mouth dishes we push across the table and tell our friends, “Try this. TRY IT.”
The 18 and Over at HI BBQ.
This week, we don’t have just one dish to recommend. Nope, not even two. We went north to find three fat kid-worthy spots to satisfy our appetite for the glorious and delicious. So whether you live out that side or you’re making a day trip of it, here’s how we eat our way across the North Shore.
Loaded funnel cake at Lani’s Yummy Yum
Starting off in Kahuku, we discovered a massive plate of barbecue piled high with over a pound of smoky beef brisket, fall-off-the-bone ribs and pulled pork at the HI BBQ truck (which since our visit has moved to Haleiwa). We zipped over to Lani’s Yummy Yum for a loaded funnel cake before finishing off in Laie with Seven Brothers’ Paniolo Fries topped with grilled pineapple, bacon bits, onions, cheese and barbecue sauce. It was a day of expanded horizons and expanded waistbands. And it was so worth it.
